Nosferatu is a German Expressionist horror film, directed by F. W. Murnau. This was the first and only film put out by Prana Film, due to the fact that the company was sued for copyright infringement. Nosferatu was an adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula. Since Murnau could not get the rights to the original novel changes had to be made. Nosferatu represented vampires and Count Dracula became Count Orlok. Obviously this was not enough of a change and the court ordered all prints of the film to be destroyed. By the time the courts ordered this, copies of the film had already been sent around the world. The film Nosferatu is the only reason why vampires can be harmed by sun light. This was never part of vampire mythology until the creation of this movie. Another influence the movie created was a more grotesque rodent like vampire as opposed to the more seductive type. Nosferatu is a great film and a true cult classic with all of the drama surrounding it. The Nosferatu type of vampire has reached a true iconic status. Dozens of artists have made there own depiction of Nosferatu. You can see its influence in art, paintings, toys, apparel, dolls, and even graffiti.
